Message from Principal

Furukawa Kenji The Director of Naragakuen Tomigaoka The Principal of Naragakuen Tomigaoka High School and Junior High School

We nurture “the power to live” through authentic experiences

“A liberal education which values experiences” is our main educational theme. We want our students to grasp Naragakuen-Tomigaoka’s three founding values: 1.“Wa(和)no Seishin(精神),” the spirit of harmony, 2. the ability to live strong and full of power, 3. the ability to see matters from a scientific point of view. We believe that with a liberal education through a lot of hands-on experiences our students will acquire these three principles and be prepared to become tomorrow’s leaders.

Communication begins with greeting.

Many children today don’t know how to communicate with others. I suggest to them that they begin with greeting. Greeting others with polite manners and a big voice is the first step to fostering communication skills. Communication usually starts with greeting whatever situation you might be in. Greeting helps to establish the proper distance between you and the person you are talking to, so that you can have a productive discussion.

To open people’s mind

We have many kinds of programs that allow students to experience and learn from the outside world, and we always tell our students that preparing for such programs beforehand is essential. The core of these programs is for students to have questions and ask questions. “Investigate beforehand, listen to someone who has experience, ask questions to understand.” We believe this attitude is the foundation for good communication.

Input to Output

Our school calls for a further step for “communication”. After practical experience, our students are expected to take three steps: 1.considering, 2.summarizing, and 3. presenting. In the first step, they strive to deepen their understanding by reflecting on the experience. Then, they organize their study and experience in the second step: summarizing. Finally, they complete their final report as the third step. Ultimately through this process, students should find that communication is not just asking questions but conveying their own thoughts to others.

Discovering ourselves through new experience

The reason why we emphasize “experience” is that it is important for students to acquire communication skills for their future. Our curriculum enables students to not only get communication skills but to also be motivated to learn by themselves. Through experience, students will meet a variety of people with different values, and discover more about their own talents and interests. At the same time, they will think about what they don’t know and should learn more about. Then, we hope students will understand how what they learn at school will be useful. If students can be aware of the connection between their daily learning and their own dreams, they will be better motivated to learn.

Having good mentors

The faculty are trying to make all of this a reality and hope that our graduates will be recognized for their academics and activities in their field of interest, diligent in their learning and play a main role in their field of interest. Always beside them and cheering them on, we try to be good guides, mentors and supporters in order to help each of our students reach their personal goals.
